How to Publish a Children's Picture Book (2026)

The short answer

A picture book is 32 pages as standard (page counts run in multiples of 8 for offset printing: 24, 32, 40 or 48), printed in full colour throughout, in a square or portrait trim. 8.5 x 8.5 in (216 x 216 mm) is the most common size. Write to your age band, leave room for the illustrations, then edit, illustrate, design and print.

What Makes a Picture Book Different

A picture book tells its story through words and art together, so the page count, the trim size and the colour printing are all fixed before you finish the manuscript. A 32-page book leaves roughly 12 to 14 double-page story spreads once the front and back matter are counted, so the story has to be built to fit that space.

Illustration is part of the planning from the start, not an extra added at the end.

Standard Trim Sizes and the 32-Page Rule

Printers fold sheets into 8-page signatures, so page counts run in multiples of 8. Thirty-two pages (two signatures) is the most economical length and the length bookstores and libraries expect.

Also seen in the market: 7 x 10, 8 x 8, 10 x 10 and 8.5 x 11 in. Keep one trim across all markets so you need only one ISBN and one set of files.

Age Bands

The age band decides the length, the vocabulary and the format.

  • Board books, ages 0 to 3: smaller trims (typically 6 x 6 or 7 x 7 in), 12 to 24 pages, thick cardboard.
  • Picture books, ages 3 to 7 (some sources say 3 to 8): the 32-page book described here.
  • Early readers, ages 5 to 7: written for the child to read alone.
  • Chapter books, ages 7 to 10, and middle grade, ages 8 to 12, are mostly text with fewer illustrations.

Hardcover vs Paperback

Both formats are available to self-publishers. Amazon KDP offers hardcover as a case laminate with no dust jacket (75 to 550 pages), and IngramSpark offers hardcover too. KDP paperback supports 24 to 828 pages depending on trim and ink. A hardcover needs its own ISBN, separate from the paperback.

Full-Colour Printing

Full-colour interiors on every spread are the standard for picture books, and they are also the main driver of the printing price. Files need bleed: as a KDP example, a full-bleed 8 x 10 in interior PDF must be 8.25 x 10.25 in, which is the trim plus 0.125 in on each side.

Editing and Designing

Edit the text before it goes to the illustrator. Then the illustrated spreads are laid out to the trim, with bleed. The manuscript stage is covered in our children's book writing guide, linked below.

Publishing Your Picture Book

Once the files are ready, you choose where to print and sell: print-on-demand for small numbers, or a print run for a launch. Our children's book printing guide, linked below, covers both. If you would rather have the whole process managed, Harmony Publishing offers full-service self-publishing for children's books; see the hub page and the packages page for what is offered and the price.

Frequently asked questions

What size should my picture book be?

The most common size is 8.5 x 8.5 in (216 x 216 mm), a square trim. Other standard choices are 8 x 10 in portrait (203 x 254 mm) and 10 x 8 in landscape (254 x 203 mm).

How many pages should a picture book be, and why 32?

Thirty-two pages is the industry standard. Printers fold sheets into 8-page signatures, so page counts run in multiples of 8 (24, 32, 40, 48), and 32 pages is the most economical length and the one bookstores and libraries expect.

How many of the 32 pages are the actual story?

After the front and back matter, a 32-page picture book leaves roughly 12 to 14 double-page story spreads.

Hardcover or paperback for a picture book?

Both are offered by KDP and IngramSpark. A hardcover needs its own ISBN, separate from the paperback.

What is a board book?

A board book is for ages 0 to 3: a smaller trim (typically 6 x 6 or 7 x 7 in), 12 to 24 pages, printed on thick cardboard.
