How to Self-Publish a Book in Nigeria (2026): The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

The short answer

To self-publish a book in Nigeria in 2026: finish and edit your manuscript, have it professionally proofread, commission a cover and interior, get your ISBN from the National Library of Nigeria, choose print-on-demand or a Lagos print run, distribute to local bookstores and online plus Amazon for global reach, then launch and market. You keep 100% of your rights and royalties.

Step 1. Finish and edit the manuscript

The manuscript must be complete first. A developmental review shapes structure, a copyedit fixes clarity and accuracy, and a proofread is the final error pass. See our editing services, copyediting and proofreading.

Editing is priced per word and by the level of edit. The international reference sources for editing rates are quoted in dollars, so we do not repeat them here. Ask us for a naira quote based on your word count.

Step 2. Design the cover and interior

The cover is the biggest driver of clicks. The interior must be typeset for print (margins, bleed and trim) and separately for ebook. See our cover design page.

Step 3. Get your ISBN from the National Library of Nigeria

Nigerian ISBNs come from the National Library of Nigeria (NLN). Create your online profile and apply on the NLN ISBN portal at isbn.nln.gov.ng. The NLN says applicants can get up to 5 or more ISBNs at once. Print and ebook editions each need their own ISBN if you want separate retailer records. More on ISBNs for books.

Legal deposit: Nigerian law requires three copies of any book published in Nigeria to be deposited with the NLN (National Library of Nigeria Act 1970, section 4). The NLN also runs a Nigerian ISBN Registry to verify genuine Nigerian ISBNs.

Step 4. Choose a print format and trim size

Trim size and page count drive the price per printed copy, and full-colour interiors (children's and illustrated books) are priced well above black and white. See our guides to trim sizes and binding types.

Step 5. Print-on-demand or a Lagos print run

Print-on-demand (POD) needs no upfront inventory, and the price per copy stays flat. It suits steady, low-volume sales and reaching international buyers through Amazon. See print-on-demand printing.

A local print run (offset) carries a fixed setup price, so the price per copy falls as the run grows. You pay for all copies upfront and hold the stock. Where it starts to make sense depends on your book's specification, so ask for a print quote rather than guess.

Step 6. Set up distribution

  • Local: approach Nigerian bookstores directly, as each sets its own terms, and consider online marketplaces such as Jumia and Konga (check each marketplace's seller terms).
  • Ebook platforms: OkadaBooks shut down on 30 November 2023 and is no longer a live channel. Ask us for current options.
  • Global: Amazon KDP is available to Nigerian authors, and IngramSpark reaches 40,000+ retailers, libraries and bookstores worldwide, which matters for diaspora readers. Check KDP's current payment options for Nigeria before you rely on them. See publishing a book on Amazon.

Step 7. Launch and market

An optimised Amazon listing, a plan for gathering reviews and a simple author platform. If you would rather a publisher handle everything, see our self-publishing packages (naira pricing on this site), or read what it costs to publish a book. We also offer publishing and marketing support.

How long does it take?

Timelines vary by book, so we give no fixed number of weeks. Here is what drives each stage.

StageWhat sets the time
Editing and proofreadingDepends on word count and the level of edit. Edits come in passes: developmental, then copyedit, then proofread.
Cover and interior designCan run in parallel with editing; the interior is finalised after the last edit.
ISBN and legal depositApply through the NLN portal once your title details are ready; deposit the three copies after printing.
Print-on-demandA copy is printed per order, so there is no print wait before you list.
Lagos print runIncludes proofing and a printing slot. Ask for a quote with dates for your book.

Self-publish yourself or use a service?

Both are honest routes. Doing it yourself (Amazon KDP, a local printer and your own editor and designer) usually costs least upfront but demands time. A full-service publisher bundles everything for one price and does the work. You keep 100% of your royalties either way.

Want us to handle it?
