Children's Book Printing in 2026
The short answer
Colour drives the price: full-colour printing runs roughly 2 to 4 times black-and-white, and offset only becomes cheaper per copy at around 500 to 1,000 copies. Print-on-demand suits small numbers and a print run suits a launch. Industry examples for a 32-page full-colour 8.5 x 8.5 in paperback are about $3.95 a copy at 500, $2.90 at 1,000 and $2.30 at 2,000.

Colour Is the Driver
Full-colour interiors can cost 2 to 4 times a black-and-white interior, and each colour layer needs its own plate on press. Full colour is standard for picture books, so printing is a real line in the budget.
POD vs Offset for Children's Books
Print-on-demand (POD) prints a copy when it is sold. You never buy stock, and you only pay when a copy sells. Industry per-copy figures for a colour picture book are roughly $4.50 to $9.00 on KDP- and IngramSpark-class platforms, flat at any quantity.
Offset printing is cheaper per copy but carries fixed plate and setup costs, with minimum runs starting around 300 to 500 copies. Offset CMYK on coated paper also reproduces a wider range of colour than digital toner: the Origin Books comparison rates POD colour accuracy as good and offset as excellent.
The Crossover (about 500 to 1,000 Copies)
For full-colour books, offset becomes cheaper per unit only around 500 to 1,000 copies (for black-and-white the crossover is lower, about 300 to 750). Below that, print-on-demand wins.
Per-Copy Examples by Run
32-page, full-colour, 8.5 x 8.5 in, offset:
| Copies | Paperback | Hardcover |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | about $3.95 | about $4.60 |
| 1,000 | about $2.90 | n/a in source |
| 2,000+ | about $2.30 | about $3.00 |
Source: Kidillus and GoBookPrinting. A hardcover typically adds $3 to $5 per copy over the same book in paperback. Across all formats, one printer lists softcover from $0.89 to $17, hardcover $1.73 to $24 and board books $1.06 to $7.70, depending on page count, trim, paper and quantity (200 to 3,000 copies).
Board Books and Hardcover
A self-cover full-colour board book (6 x 6 in, 20 pages, 350 gsm) runs about $2.30 a copy at 500, $1.55 at 1,000, $1.40 at 2,000 and $1.00 at 5,000 or more. Hardcover board books run about $2.75 at 500 down to $1.30 at 5,000 or more. The minimum run for board books is typically 500 to 1,000 copies.
Paper and Finish
Paper stock, trim and finish all move the per-copy price. Staying at a standard trim, choosing paperback over hardcover, ordering one larger run so setup is charged once, and using lighter paper when the book is not full-bleed together typically cut the per-copy price by 35 to 45% at volume.
